Twenty-One definition and meaning

Twenty-one is a centuries-old gambling game that has developed into popular casino games like Pontoon and Blackjack.

If you’ve played either blackjack or pontoon before, chances are you’re already familiar with the general rules of Twenty-One. The game includes a banker and several punters. The role of the banker is assumed by one player, and it rotates around the table unless a casino has one of their staff members to play the role of the banker.

As the name suggests, the goal of the game is to get as close as possible to 21 or have 21 exactly, without exceeding the number. To play, players have to place a bet either before the cards are dealt or after they have viewed their first card and before they have been dealt their second card. In addition, you may ask to receive a third card from the banker for free, or you can “buy” it by raising your initial stakes.

Naturally, these are only the general rules of Twenty-One, and there are several more rules that can vary depending on the casino you are playing in. Furthermore, some regions have their versions of Twenty-One, such as Germany’s Siebzehn und Vier and French Vingt-Un.
